Bluecurrent helps make gas use smarter with roll out for Mercury

Bluecurrent is starting its deployment of advanced gas meters for Mercury, in a three-year programme of work.
The deal will see more than 70,000 gas meters upgraded by Bluecurrent for Mercury customers. More than 130,000 advanced gas meters have already been installed by Bluecurrent across New Zealand since 2021.
The new, battery powered gas meters are ultrasonic and provide detailed daily consumption and event based information from the meter to Mercury via Bluecurrent's headend data platforms.
Neil Williams, Bluecurrent's chief executive, says the deal with Mercury is another step in the journey towards a digitised future.
"The introduction of advanced gas meters significantly reduces the need for in-person meter reads and estimated readings. The advanced meters give customers improved consumption visibility to manage their gas usage."
Customers with a legacy gas meter are being contacted in advance for their free upgrade.
The advanced meter enables hydrogen to be added to the gas supply, creating a mix that may provide a more sustainable gas product in the future.
